Campfire Pizzas

It seems like everyone I talk to either makes these regularly or has never heard of making pizzas at a campfire, so I thought I'd share.  We use to make these all the time when I was little and we would go camping as a family.  Now we make these over a fire pit in the backyard, since the only camping I do is on Black Friday outside of Macy's.

Here's what you need:
A loaf of cheap white bread for the crust
Pam non-stick spray
Pizza Sauce
Cheese
Pizza toppings (pepperoni, sausage, onions, green peppers, mushrooms)

You'll also need one of these campfire pie irons:

First, spray the inside of the iron with the non-stick spray so the pizza will come out
Set a piece of bread on one side of the iron and add sauce
then cheese....
......then veggies, meat, and more cheese

Add a second piece of bread to the top of the pizza.  Be sure to only work on one side of the iron, rather than building the pizza on both sides and trying to flip it together.

Close the pizza in using the top of the iron and clamp it shut.

Cut off any crust that sticks out with a butter knife, or it will burn.

Place the iron in a campfire and rotate sides half way through. Cooking time is about 2-5 minutes a side, depending on how hot the fire is.

The pizza should look like this when it's out of the iron--perfectly brown.

Here's the finished pizza pocket with all the goodness inside. Mmm!

  1. I think I will do these in my fireplace in front of the Christmas tree. The kids will love that! Good winter activity.
